You heard about it, now it’s officially here. California has passed a law banning all wireless cell phone usage while driving – unless using a hands-free device like a bluetooth. Beginning July 1st of 2008 we will, or should, see no one holding a phone to their ear while driving on California highways – about damn time!

I’ve had a bluetooth headset for about 2 months now and have to admit – while I hated the idea of sticking something in my ear, it is extremely convenient when I am driving not just on the highway but anywhere. If you don’t own a bluetooth device yet, I’d suggest running down to your nearest wireless store, or even walmart or target to pick one up.

So what if I get pulled over after July 1st 2008?

Worse case scenario, so far, you get a ticket between $20-$50 per incident. I’m sure if you are a repeat “bluetooth offender”, the law will find a way to deal with you uniquely to change your mind about the bluetooth headsets.

Some of the more popular bluetooth headsets I’ve seen around:

Plantronics Bluetooth Headset Plantronics Bluetooth Headset

Jabra Bluetooth BT500VJabra Bluetooth BT500V

Motorola HS8501 Headset Motorola HS8501 Headset

Here are a few online store to purchase your bluetooth from, if you haven’t bought one yet.

Some other states already have this law in place includes Connecticut, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and some local jurisdictions.

p/s: I still feel weird having a piece of plastic hanging on my ear when I was out shopping with my family last weekend!
