The field of SEO, as we know it, has come full circle in my opinion - as far as Google is concerned. Just when you think that SEO is becoming more understandable and make sense, freaking Google throws a curveball at you!! If you have been doing SEO or even reading about it for some time, one of the biggest deal is to create so-called friendly SEO URLs so that search engine crawlers like Googlebot can index your site better, faster and rank you higher in their results.
It was a widely acceptable concept to rewrite your dynamic URLs into something more readable, contextually relevant (without spam) and static. This was then…
Today on Google’s webmaster blog - people from the search quality team are saying that Google is happily indexing and ranking all your dynamic URLs without issues. They even go as far to recommend the following:
Does that mean I should avoid rewriting dynamic URLs at all?
That’s our recommendation, unless your rewrites are limited to removing unnecessary parameters, or you are very diligent in removing all parameters that could cause problems.
I’m sure this make sense at some cosmic level, in Google’s underground labs - but if I read carefully between the lines, Google is saying “The internet is ours, we command 60%+ market share, and what we say will own you…bitches!”
Is Google starting to show how much it controls the internet? Are they really playing “god” by “not being evil”? Or is Google trying to get the masses to fix their problem, again?
What really pisses me off about this whole post from google about dynamic urls is that this announcement will cause mass panic, if it hasn’t yet, and SEOs all over will suddenly look like idiots for recommending the friendly URLs that Google used to like just last week. However, SEOs should always practice prudence and use their years of wisdom and follow the mantra “NEVER TRUST GOOGLE!”
The good news is many already know they do index dynamic urls - its obvious from their results. So I’m not sure how many SEOs crapped in their pants from this announcement by Google - but from one SEO to another, chiilax - what you should be really thinking about is why this annonuncement now…
- Is there something fundamentally wrong with the way Google handles your redirects?
- Is Google hiding a bigger problem from us?
- Does this remind you of how Google created a marketplace for link-buying/selling services and then start to devalue links?
What’s next Google?
