Perhaps that’s the hope of many webmasters or budding web entrepreneurs - living the dream to one day make millions from their website through ads, sales and leads. Thousands of new websites launch daily with the goal of making a million dollars - but not all websites are created equal. Not every site is a goldmine.

I came across a very good blog post about website monetization that asks the most fundamental, yet challenging question - “Is Your Web Site Optimized for Revenue?”. We’d all like to think that every single one of our websites was built to generate revenue. What’s more - we also like to live in a state of self-indulgence that our website is the “right one” for users - and our competitors’ sites suck. In order to accomplish greatness, we need to wipe these thoughts out of your mind and face some hard realities.

The posts had me question some of my own projects in the past. While I managed to generate revenue, was that just the side effect of a site that was designed for a different reason? Or did the site generate revenue because it was optimized to monetized? So how do you go about making sure that your next website is designed and built to achieve both traffic (search engine and users) and revenue?

Here are some questions to answer:

  • how to maintain consistent quality traffic
  • search engine traffic - check, users - check, revenue - what’s your plan?
  • how well do you understand your users’ behavior?
  • is your site built to educate, persuade and convert?
  • trying too hard to sell? scale back and empathize with your user
  • do you spend more time acquiring new traffic or converting the traffic you currently have? (TRICK QUESTION!)

What boggles my mind is that there are trillions of web pages floating around and only a pea-sized amount of them actually make money. Is your site part of the pea-size population?
