On this supposedly biggest shopping day of the year I am staying home as I do each year to avoid the madness that’s out there in malls, electronic stores and other retailers – all over saving a few dollars. To those who dare to brave the traffic and shoving – I tip my hat to you. But I sense Black Friday shopping appears to bring out the worse in humans – rather than share in the holiday spirits.
First on the news this morning, a worker at a Wal-Mart in New York reportedly got trampled to death. If that didn’t make you pause and think and go WTF – you have a cold heart, like the hundreds of shoppers who just rushed in, stepped on the worker and left him for dead. Is society so caught up in material goods that a human life is no longer treasured? I can’t imagine what the man’s family is going through right now – losing a loved one to mindless, heartless and selfish idiots who only care to save $10 on their next pair of jeans or save $50 on a new tv. For crying out loud – this is Wal-Mart! What can possibly be that important to buy?
Another news in a Toys R Us in South California – supposedly over an argument. I just saw this on CNBC so nothing official has been released yet. But they do know that a gunshot was fired inside the toy store.
I really question the social responsibility of retailers and the oversight and lack of security offered by local enforcements during this shopping day. How many more innocent people have to get injured, killed or attacked before something is done? Is Black Friday really that important not to do away with? Should the government hold retailers responsible for incidents that occur in their stores? I mean seriously, who is responsible for violent acts of discount-hungry, bargain-hunting deal shoppers? And if no one is – my ultimate question is – should someone be held accountable? I think so – before it gets worse.
I really believe that humans have lost their respect for each other in exchange for material things, and it will only get worse in the next 5 years. New president or not, something has to be done about this stupid lame excuse of retailers trying to make extra bucks. Deals will not stop, stores will continue offering discounts that shoppers think are steals. But at the end of the day, you or someone you know could fall victim to the ruthless barbaric crowd of shoppers, we call humans. Is it worth it? To some the risk is worthwhile, to others, like me – I prefer to stay away from the mob. But I still wish everyone found what they were looking for and safe shopping.
If you hear of other stories, please add to this…my prediction is we will hear more Black Friday horror stories later on today. I hope to be wrong!
