Everyone Is Making Millions from Their Web Site
Written by derek chew in Tuesday, October 14th 2008
Perhaps that's the hope of many webmasters or budding web entrepreneurs - living the dream to one day make millions from their website through ads, sales and leads. Thousands of new websites launch daily with the goal of making a million dollars - but not all websites are created equal. Not every site is a goldmine.
I came across a very good blog post about website monetization that asks the most fundamental, yet challenging question - [+]
Google Says Jump…You Say How High
Written by derek chew in Tuesday, September 23rd 2008
The field of SEO, as we know it, has come full circle in my opinion - as far as Google is concerned. Just when you think that SEO is becoming more understandable and make sense, freaking Google throws a curveball at you!! If you have been doing SEO or even reading about it for some time, one of the biggest deal is to create so-called friendly SEO URLs so that search engine crawlers like Googlebot [+]
Yahoo Under Pressure - Revealed in SERPs
Written by derek chew in Tuesday, September 9th 2008
When a company is struggling to find ways to increase revenue and meet expectations of its investors, employees and partners, a sudden shift to desperate tactics become obvious. Don't mistake desperation for strategic execution - because they can sometimes get murky with media, PR, and spin doctors.
I'm referring to Yahoo here - if it's not obvious already :) I was recently searching for consumer products and noticed, now more so than ever, that a major [+]
Modern Day SEO Warriors
Written by derek chew in Tuesday, September 2nd 2008
I came across a very good survey on SERoundTable.com about penalties and SEOs. Those two words "Penalty" and "SEO" typically send shivers down every internet marketers' spine - well most. If you work for a large corporation and do their SEO work or work with people from the Search department, try sending them an email with the tagline "I think Google has penalized us!" - and see what reaction you get. My guess is that [+]
Cuil.com Serving Up Limited Results
Written by derek chew in Monday, July 28th 2008
Don't think for a minute that I've got no smart remarks to make on Cuil.com! I've tried to hold back since this morning but now that I have a few minutes of free time, I've decided to take Cuil for a spin. I do like their simplicity (Just Google in a different color), and I also like the profiles behind the development of Cuil as a product - google engineer(s) I believe. So far so [+]
Google Is Confused About Indexing
Written by derek chew in Friday, July 11th 2008
As much money as Google has invested in their search technology and AI, there are still some simpler things that the mighty search engine has problems with.
This URL does exist and it's actually a filter type result from smarter.com. But checking to see if Google has indexed that page, brings up an error. See picture below.
However, Yahoo does a slightly better job at indexing that product page. Of course if you notice the title in [+]
Google Keyword Tool Shows More Data
Written by derek chew in Thursday, July 10th 2008
I just noticed this today when I was toying around with Google's free keyword tool. This could have been a few days old already - but it's pretty cool that Adwords is providing some tangible numbers under the "Approx Search Volume" and "Approx Avg Search Volume" columns.
This will definitely help webmasters in their keyword research, especially those who are either just starting out or cannot afford other 3rd party tools. Hopefully sites and companies alike [+]
Yahoo SERPs Displays LinkedIn Content
Written by derek chew in Monday, July 7th 2008
Just noticed this today while goofing around with Yahoo to search for my own name. It looks like Yahoo! is beginning to open up to more content instead of relying on its own strength. A very good move on their part.
Did another search for my buddy Todd Malicoat (Stuntdubl.com) and also got his Linkedin profile.
If you click to permanently store that result, then you'll have personalized results the next time you search for Todd Malicoat [+]
Google Bolding Letters Not in Search Query
Written by derek chew in Monday, June 30th 2008
DO NO EVIL!
So proclaims Google in all its glory. But I noticed some strange behavior in the SERPs while doing a search on seemingly a very innocent product Logitech Z Cinema 2.1 - and the bolded terms caught my attention.
What you will see is that the number "6" is bolded in the URLs of the SERPs of my query. I tried looking and coming up with every damn SEO theory and search reasons why [+]More From Choose a category:
