As a boy, I went from school to my father’s general clinic on Amoy Street. I watched Dr Chew meet his patients. He listened before he spoke, showed them their X-rays and explained what he saw. Even with people waiting outside, he gave the person in front of him his full attention.
We sometimes shared lunch in a small room beside his counselling room. At night, I listened to his life stories. But I learned just as much by watching the way he treated people.
I think about that example when I think about leadership. People hear what we say, but over time they notice what we do. The attention we give someone can say more than a speech.
