I taught myself to ski. One day, a coach joined us for a lesson. I went down green, red and black slopes without falling once. By the end of the day, I felt pleased with myself.
When I told the coach, I expected praise. Instead, he suggested that staying upright all day might mean I had not pushed myself hard enough. I had been counting the falls I avoided; he was looking at how much I was willing to learn.
That question stayed with me. When I take a new step, I try to ask whether I am protecting what I can already do or giving myself room to improve.
